DETECTS SYRIAN CW IN SUDAN
Middle East Newsline 21/09/04
"The U.S. intelligence community has determined that Syria deployed
weapons of mass destruction in Sudan's rebel Darfour province.
U.S. officials said the CIA has obtained what it deemed reliable
information that Syria used a range of air bombs and perhaps rockets
filled chemical and biological weapons in the war in Darfour. They said
the BW and CW were used in Sudanese military attacks against African
villagers in Darfour..."

Berlin
questions chemical weapons report in Dafur
Expatica 15/09/04
"German intelligence sources said Wednesday they had no information
which could confirm a report claiming Syria had tested chemical weapons in
cooperation with the government of Sudan on black Africans in Sudan's
troubled Darfur region.
Germany's Die Welt newspaper - citing "Western intelligence
reports" - said dozens of people were killed in the tests carried out
from last May.

Frozen
corpses were brought to a Khartoum hospital after the tests and examined
by Syrian doctors, said the report.
The report did not identify what type of chemicals were allegedly used in
Darfur but said five airplanes from Syrian Arab Airlines flew in the
chemical weapons and specialists from Damascus.
"We find the details very surprising and would have evaluated them
differently," said a German intelligence source speaking on the
condition of anonymity..."
Syrien
testet chemische Waffen an Sudanern

Translation :
"Berlin - In June of this year, Syrian special forces used chemical
weapons against the people of Darfur. This action, which killed thousands
of people, was in concordance with the Sudan government. This conclusion
is drawn by western intelligence agencies. They were supported by eye
witness accounts, which came out through various Arab media.
According to documents of western intelligence agencies, in posession by
WELT, Syrian officers met with representatives of the Sudanese army in a
Khartoum suburb in May of this year. During the meetings they dealt with
the question how to expand military cooperation. According to intelligence
reports, the Syrian delegation offered a closer cooperation in the field
of chemical warfare. With that, according to the sources, it was suggested
to test the effects of chemical agents on the Sudan People's Liberation
Army (SPLA). Because Khartoum was in the middle of peace negotiations with
the rebels in May, the Sudanese delegation suggested to test in on the
native African population. Upon which at least five airplanes from Syrian
Arab Airlines flew from Damascus to Khartoum, with specialists on board
from the Syrian institute for chemical warfare, along with technical
equipment.
Exactly when the deployment started in Darfur, cannot be said with
certainty. In any case, Sudanese eye witnesses give their account of
strange going-ons in the Khartoum Al-Fashr hospital, in an article on the
Arab website "Ilaf" from August 2. In June, out of nowhere
thousandsof frozen bodies were brought to the hospital. They noted the
strange wounds all over the bodies. A little while later, Sudanese
soldiers supposedly closed off one of the wings in the building. Believing
the witnesses, access afterwards was limited to an unknown team of Syrian
doctors. Days after, Sudanes workers had disposed of the bodies.
For some time now, military experts have information on a Sudanes-Syrian
joint effort in the field of chemical weapon research. Also, again and
again reports from Syrian dissidents would come out, which would speak of
the use of chemical weapons on prisoners."

"London:
Al-Sharq al-Awsat (Internet Version-WWW) in Arabic 11 Apr 04 [Report by
Razzuk al-Ghawi in Damascus And al-Sharq al-Awsat in London:
"Damascus Denies Western Intelligence Allegations of Transfer of
Syria's Banned Weapons to Sudan in Civilian Planes. Scud Missiles Shipped
to Khartoum, Following Agreement With Companies. But Without al-Bashir's
Knowledge"]
A Syrian official source has strongly denied yesterday reports, quoting
some "western intelligence sources", that "some Weapons of
Mass Destruction and missiles" have been sent from Syria to Sudan.
The Syrian source described these reports as "a kind of fabrication,
and simple allegations with no foundation and completely baseless."
Asked about the reasons behind the spreading of these "fabricated
reports and allegations", the Syrian official source told al-Sharq
al-Awsat, "these allegations are part of dubious campaigns currently
launched against Syria, because of its firm political stand vis-à-vis the
issues of the region and the current situation in the field."
According to some western intelligence sources, Syria has been smuggling
for months some of its Weapons of Mass Destruction to Sudan. These weapons
were being transported in civilian planes. The same sources indicated that
the alleged smuggling was taking place on the basis of a coordinated
operation between the Syrian government and "companies" in
Khartoum, without the knowledge of the Sudanese President, Umar al-Bashir.
The same sources added that the freight operation is part of attempts made
by Damascus to avoid the possibility of discovering its presumed weapons,
bearing in mind that the Syrian government is currently subjected to US
and European intermittent pressure to follow in the steps of Libya and
abandon such weapons.
The same [western] sources alleged, according to what has been reported in
the "Middle East online" website, that Damascus has been
pursuing since last January, at least, the transfer of Scud missiles
parts, of "C" and "D" types. This is in addition to
shipping to Khartoum components used in the production of Weapons of Mass
Destruction.
According to the same intelligence sources, these consignments are
transported in civilian planes bound for the Sudanese capital where they
are kept in special warehouses. The same sources alleged that the Syrian
military authorities "directly supervise" this shipment
operation.
A western prominent intelligence source said, "There is a widespread
concern within the Syrian government that Damascus could be next in the
list of countries which would be subjected to extensive US and
international pressure in order to open their installations connected to
Weapons of Mass Destruction, to international inspectors, in light of the
Libyan decision." The same source added, "This is the reason
that pushed the Syrians to take some of their Weapons of Mass Destruction
out of the country."
According to the same source, President al-Bashir has not been informed
about the arrival in Khartoum of missiles and components related to
Weapons of Mass Destruction, which originated in Syria. The same source
believes that the transfer of these consignments and their storage are
taking place thanks to cooperation between the Syrian regime and some
Sudanese companies that are committed to helping Syria conceal its alleged
weapons away from the eyes of the United States and Europe.
It is to be indicated that the presumed Weapons of Mass Destruction have
been the focus of international interest, at least since the collapse of
the Iraqi former regime. The controversy surrounding these alleged weapons
was a direct cause for the delay in the signing of the "partnership
agreement" between the European Union and Damascus. It is known that
Britain leads the European countries that have set a condition for the
signing of such an agreement, desperately needed by Syria. Such a
condition is the abandonment by Damascus of its Weapons of Mass
Destruction.
Besides, a Syrian former political prisoner, Nizar Nayyuf, who currently
lives in Paris, alleged last year that the Iraqi Former President, Saddam
Husayn, had "smuggled" some Weapons of Mass Destruction that
were said to be in his possession [to Syria].
It is to be said Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, has preceded the
Syrian journalist [Nizar Nayyuf] in launching the same allegations.
However, Washington has officially admitted that there was no evidence to
support such allegations.
Meanwhile, in Khartoum the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Mustafa Uthman
Isma'il, categorically denied reports that Syria had secretly smuggled
Weapons of Mass Destruction to Sudan. He affirmed that such reports that
have been circulating among world media are "tendentious and false."
According to the Sudanese minister, "these reports are part of a
campaign orchestrated by tendentious parties that endeavored to spread
such false allegations." He went on to say, "this is not the
first time that such allegations are launched. In the past, similar
allegations were spread about the presence of Iraqi weapons in Sudan.
Before that, some false allegations were published. They were sponsored by
the United States, which, on the basis of such allegations, launched a
strike on al-Shifa Factory."
In his statement, the minister said, "Sudan has nothing to hide or to
fear. Sudan acts with transparency." He added, "We are following
these destructive activities and whenever Sudan breaks a chain of the
siege, these kinds of allegations emerge. However, we do not want to be
the focus of international opinion."
