Nanotech - L'Europe doit doubler ses investissements de R&D sur les nanotechnologies pour rester dans la course - Europe needs to double its investment in research and development of nanotechnology to prevent falling behind the United States and Asia...

EUROPEAN UNION EARMARKS BILLIONS TO PREPARE FOR A NANO FUTURE
Small Times 06/07/04

"Nokia Corp. and STMicroelectronics have signed a joint declaration with the European Commission calling for $7.32 billion a year to be pumped into the development of nanotechnology, the science of molecular engineering, to prevent Europe falling behind the United States and Asia.

According to the declaration, Europe needs to double its investment in research and development of nanotechnology. A commission spokesman said: The U.S. and Asian countries are investing huge amounts of public funds in research and manufacturing. So, Europe must increase its efforts to stay in the race. The required annual investment of $7.4 billion would comprise $2.4 billion a year to support upstream research plus $5 billion a year for downstream industrial research and development.

Nanotechnology manipulates materials on a scale so small that it is measured in measured in nanometers, billionths of a meter. The technology holds the key to the development of powerful new miniaturised computer chips and the mobile communications' Holy Grail, superpowered batteries.

The technology is crucial to the development of mobile communications device makers such as Nokia, which rely on being able to squeeze more and more technology and functions into small handsets..."
